Early 1800s Combination Lock
Tobacco Box
Classic early 19th C. brass combination lock tobacco box with a super early pocket-polished surface. British, possibly for American export, ca. 1820-1830. Tobacco was pricey in the early 19th C. and the popular lore is that tobacco boxes with combination locks were produced, mostly in Birmingham, to keep servants from dipping into their employer’s nose candy. With the right combination, the top opens to a tin-lined interior. Beautifully made.
